A Breakdown of the ACT Test Sections
The ACT test is divided into five sections, designed to assess a range of academic skills. Here’s what each section covers:
English
- Duration: 45 minutes
- Questions: 75
- Focus: This section evaluates grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, rhetorical skills, and understanding of text style and structure.
Mathematics
- Duration: 60 minutes
- Questions: 60
- Focus: Covers pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. The math level is similar to the SAT and may feel manageable for students with strong math skills.
Reading
- Duration: 35 minutes
- Questions: 40
- Focus: Involves reading four passages across topics like prose fiction, social science, humanities, and natural science. Students answer 10 questions per passage.
Science
- Duration: 35 minutes
- Questions: 40
- Focus: Tests the ability to analyze and interpret data, graphs, and scientific experiments. Students must understand scientific concepts, evaluate conflicting viewpoints, and solve problems using provided information.
Writing (Optional)
- Duration: 40 minutes
- Focus: Students write an essay in response to a prompt. This section assesses the ability to analyze perspectives and create a well-supported argument. While there’s no strict format, clarity, organization, and evidence are key.
